For three and a half weeks during the summer of 2019, GEAR UP hosted a program designed to give college-bound teens space to discover and practice literacy, inquiry, and self-advocacy skills. The GEAR UP Chicago Professional Development team built flexible opportunities for teens to choose what to learn, how to learn, and where to learn.
Through inquiry, teens grappled with questions:
  • What makes a city great?
  • How does place and space inform who we become?
  • What can the past tell us about the future?
  • Who does Chicago really belong to? And why does it matter?
  • What about Chicago am I curious about?
  • How does my neighborhood fit in?
For their final project, teens created zines to express what they learned.
By designing a safe space to try their wings, teens acquired valuable skills for finishing high school and making important life choices, including the choices successful college students make each day.
