Why is the Chicago GEAR UP & Discovering Healthcare Careers partnership a win-win?
David Sperling, the Chicago GEAR UP coordinator for healthcare partnerships asks Maria Rivera, the founder of the Discovering Healthcare Careers program, why the GEAR UP partnership works so well.
Here's what students had to say about the program:
Belen – Farragut High School
When I was in Medical Imaging...
When I was in Medical Imaging, I met a Latino parent whose daughter was getting an ultrasound. She began to speak to me in Spanish and told me how difficult it was to understand what was going on and how she was not comfortable asking questions. I told her about the purpose of our internship and she agreed that we need more Latinos who are bilingual in healthcare careers, and she thanked me for making her more comfortable.
Viviana – Hancock High School
The first department I shadowed in was Speech & Audiology...
The first department I shadowed in was Speech & Audiology. I am so impressed by how the audiologist is able to get children to pay attention. She used games and sounds to get them to participate. Seeing this reassured me that I do want to work with kids in the future.
Ashly – Roosevelt High School
My second week, I was in the Emergency Department...
My second week, I was in the Emergency Department. It was an amazing experience because I had the opportunity to meet Triage Nurses and an amazing Paramedic all of whom made me think about solutions to problems that I had never thought about before.
